Description

Radical nephrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the entire kidney, including the surrounding fat, lymph nodes, and adrenal gland if necessary. It is typically performed to treat kidney cancer or other severe kidney diseases. During a radical nephrectomy, the surgeon will make an incision in the abdomen or side of the body, depending on the location of the kidney. The blood vessels supplying the kidney will be clamped, and the kidney will be removed along with any surrounding tissues or organs that may be affected by cancer. After the procedure, the patient will typically need to stay in the hospital for a few days to recover. Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed to manage pain and prevent infection. The patient may also need to follow a special diet and avoid strenuous activity for several weeks. In some cases, a partial nephrectomy may be an alternative to radical nephrectomy. This procedure involves removing only the part of the kidney affected by cancer, leaving the rest of the healthy kidney intact.
